Merece is the portuguese word for “Deserves” and also an acronym for “Movimento Empresarial para a REciclagem de Cartões com Componentes Eletrónicos”, wich means: Business Movement for the Recycling of Cards with Electronic Components.

Merece was born from Contisystems’ desire to do more to minimize the environmental impact of its activity. Contisystems is a national company that, among other activities, has carried out the personalization of bank cards for over 25 years. These are plastic cards that, once expired, usually end up on common garbage.

What is
our goal ?

The aim of the movement is to involve as many card issuers as possible, in order to encourage companies and individuals to contribute to the ecologically responsible treatment of unused cards with electronic components.

How will we do this? How will we do this?
The planet deserves The planet deserves

- Waste

We will collect the unused cards in a number of ways:

1

By capturing expired cards in ATMs

2

By using
collection boxes

3

By mail

After the waste is centralized in Contisystems it is securely destroyed, and then sent to Extruplás, a company that will use it to manufacture urban furniture. From waste it will become feedstock.

+ Trees

Additionally, the movement intends to offset the carbon emissions generated by the production of cards by planting trees. For this purpose, we will be working with our planting partners that develop and implement programs for the recovery of ecologically degraded areas through the restitution of native forests and native species. For every kilo of waste collected, Merece will plant a tree and guarantee its maintenance for 5 years.
0

card

=

+ 0

grams of carbon

It is estimated that the production of each card with electronic components generates around 150g of carbon.
0 KG

of card waste

=

+ 0

Kg of carbon

If 1 card, wich weights about 6g, generates 150g of carbon, 1kg of card waste generates 25kg of carbon.

0 x 5

tree x years

=

- 0

kg of carbon

Each tree planted, for each kg of waste collected, can absorb, in adulthood, more than 5kg of carbon per year.
